DoHS reports decline in overdose-related deaths, overdose 911 calls

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – As of this week, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services (DoHS) released data showing a drop in overdose-related deaths and 911 calls for overdoses over the past year.


In the first four months of 2023 to the same period in 2024, there has been a 36% decrease in overdose deaths. DoHS reported that even with pending cases, the decrease should stay at or above 28%.


Additionally, there’s been a 6.9% drop in deaths from August 2023 to August 2024. The data also shows that October 2024 was the lowest monthly call data for 911 calls relating to overdoses for several years, with only 402 overdose calls reported. For comparison, there were 589 calls in October 2023, 756 in October 2022 and 826 in October 2021.
